According to Fusion, 50 lawsuits were filed against Uber in U.S. federal court during 2015 alone. With the recent settling of “The People of the State of California vs. Uber Technologies, Inc.” it’s becoming apparent Uber would rather settle than face certain potentially embarrassing and damaging trials. Within the last nine months, Uber has settled the following lawsuits:
- Misleading Customers About Safety/Background Checks: $25 million
Recently, Uber agreed to pay up to $25 million to settle the lawsuit brought by the San Francisco and Los Angeles district attorneys alleging the company misled customers about its safety practices and background checks. (April 7, 2016).
- Under the terms of this settlement, Uber will pay $10 million within 60 days ($5 million to each city).
- The remaining $15 million penalty could be waived in two years should Uber comply with all terms of the settlement.
- * “Safe Rides Fee”: $28.5 million
In February 2016, Uber informed a federal judge in San Francisco it wants to settle this class-action lawsuit by paying 25 million riders who made U.S. trips between Jan. 1, 2013, and Jan. 31, 2016.
- The $28.5 million settlement will be divided between 25 million people in California, (approximately $1.14 per person before attorney fees).
- Uber agreed to get rid of the term, “Safe Ride Fee,” and will now use the phrase, “Booking Fee.”
- Uber also agreed to change the way it describes safety-related features in its advertising.
*This settlement is still awaiting judge approval.
